The first week, I kept track of everything I/we ate and blogged an update to let you guys know how it was going. But I don’t want to do that long-term. With a busy toddler and a busy life, getting into the nitty gritty like that just isn’t a priority. I do, however, want to let you know how our journey is progressing.
The first trimester, I gained no weight. I had little appetite. When I was hungry, I ate mostly fresh fruits and other raw foods, and I was grateful for the ridiculously fresh produce we received weekly from our CSA farm share. I started reading Nina’s Plank’s book Real Food For Mother and Baby and took her advice to heart, adding whole-fat foods (especially dairy), continuing to drink raw milk and eat raw milk cheese, and adding as much fish to my diet as I could stand.
I had just switched from my regular OBGYN to a nurse practitioner that my friend recommended, and I scheduled a visit with my new medical professional to get her up-to-speed on my heath issues. My last doctor never seemed to have the time to listen to my concerns, and I could tell right away that my nurse practitioner was different. We had an hour to talk and get to know each other.
There are too many diets out there to count. If you want to lose weight, be healthy, have young skin, or any other countless nutrition related goal, there is a diet out there that will give you a mantra on how to eat. Protein good. Carbs bad. These fats good. These fats bad. Exercise. Don’t stress out.
We started as members of the CSA program last autumn, and I am often asked by family and friends what kinds of foods I get from the share. In response, I am starting this blog series to answer that question: 52 weeks with my CSA: one family’s commitment to local agriculture. I will post, once a week, a photo of our take home from the farm as well as how the experience affects our family.
