BOOKS ON REAL FOOD:
In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto by Michael Pollan.
Real Food: What to Eat and Why by Nina Planck.
Chew On This: Everything You Don’t Want to Know About Fast Food by Charles Wilson & Eric Schlosser
PREGNANCY, BIRTH AND EARLY CHILDHOOD:
Real Food for Mother and Baby, by Nina Planck. This book focuses on practical nutrition choices during pregnancy, as well as an easy transition for introducing babies to solid foods.
Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering by Sarah J. Buckley, MD. This book introduced me to the concept that birth is not a medical condition, but an amazing facet of the life experience. It also covers breastfeeding, co-sleeping and early attachment. Buckley is a mother of four children, as well as an family physician.
The Business of Being Born. This Documentary film introduced me to many of the abuses that an overly medical birth can have on both mother and baby. Includes real footage of births, including homebirths.
Diaper Free! The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene by Ingrid Bauer. An alternative approach to constant diapering, Natural Infant Hygiene encourages early communication between parent and baby. This is not a coercive approach, and it is not early potty training, but a different idea about how to approach care for a baby’s elimination needs. Bauer can come across as a raving hippie, but I like her , anyways, and I love this book!
